- Love for People...Healthy mentors assure those around them of their desire for the best. They have the ability to say ''I love you'' in their words and actions.
- Team Player...There is a team of people God has put in each person’s life. Healthy mentors understand they are not the only ones speaking into the mentee’s life.
- Concern for the Future...Not only is a mentor concerned about the present circumstances in a mentee’s life, but the mentor is also invested in the mentee’s future success.
- Adequate Time to Invest...Mentoring takes time. Healthy mentors have a good life balance and have the appropriate amount of time to invest in the relationship.
- Honesty...Sometimes mentors will need to bring accountability and challenge to a mentee’s life. Healthy mentors care enough about the growth of a mentee to be brutally honest at times.
- Vulnerability/Transparency...A mentor’s ability to be transparent with his/her own shortcomings can deepen the trust relationship significantly. Healthy mentors are courageous enough to be vulnerable and show that they are on a spiritual journey as well.
- Provides Resources...Healthy mentors understand that they don’t possess all the wisdom and information a mentee needs to succeed. They know how to point people to the right opportunities.
- Remembers What It's Like...Healthy mentors never forget the journey God has brought them along in life. They both use the wisdom gained for influence and stay humble remembering their past.
- Models Christ-likeness/Integrity...The spiritual influence a mentor has cannot be over communicated or underestimated. Healthy mentors understand the responsibility they bear to live a life of integrity before their mentee(s). This also implies sustained growth on the part of the mentor as well.
- Intentional About Praying for Mentee...Only God brings true, lasting change in a person’s life. Healthy mentors recognize that they cannot change the mentee, and, therefore, they pray regularly on behalf of the mentee. A focus of prayer will guide a mentor’s words and thoughts.
- Patient...Healthy mentors see the work of mentoring as a lifelong process. While they expect results, they also understand the importance of wrestling through pain, adversity, and learning as a mentee.
- Must be a Mentee Herself...Healthy mentors are growing mentors. It is very difficult to challenge someone to grow if you are not growing yourself. Mentors must make it a point to regularly (not necessarily continuously) have a mentor as well.
- Ability to Listen...a lot...Mentees need a safe environment in which they can express their thoughts, fears, passion, etc. and simply be able to talk. Healthy mentors talk when necessary and allow room for the Holy Spirit to work through their pointed questions and listening as the mentee talks through issues.
- Confidence...Healthy mentors are confident in two key areas. First, they are confident in what Christ has done in their lives and their ability to share from those experiences. Second, they are confident in the fact that the Holy Spirit can and will speak through them to the mentee.
